Angol nyelvtan 01: Who or Whom?

A kommunikáció fontos része a kérdésfeltevés. Kit? Kivel? Kinek? Kitől? stb. Who or Whom?

Hogyan kérdezz személyekre? Ebben a videóban erre kapsz választ: Who or Whom?

Grammar

Who or Whom? To whom, or who… to?

Hiya! Let me tell you a simple story and ask you a bunch of questions along the way. Here we go:

A couple of weeks ago my wife decided to visit her family in London. So, she sent an email to them recently. A day later she received a reply from her mom. Now my wife is packing and travelling to London with the kids next week. On the way, she’s going to visit and stay with her friends in Brighton.

A couple of weeks ago my wife decided to visit her family in London.

Let’s focus on the persons in the sentence:

Who decided to visit her family? My wife did.
Who will she visit in London? Her family.

She sent an email to them recently.

To whom did she send an email? recently or Who did she send an email to? To her family.

A day later she received a reply from her mom.

From whom did she receive a reply? or Who did she receive a reply from? From her mom.

Now my wife is packing and travelling to London with the kids next week.

With whom is she travelling to London next week? or Who is she travelling to London with? With the kids.

On the way, she’s going to visit and stay her friends in Brighton.

With whom is she going to stay? or Who is she going to stay in Brighton with? With her friends.

Great. So, when you ask a question about the subject (the person at the beginning of the sentence), use “who”. However, if there is a preposition in front of the person in the sentence, you will ask “to whom”, “from whom”, “at whom”, “with whom” etc. just as the preposition wants.

However, you have got a choice here: as you see, you can move the preposition to the end of the sentence.

Good, but which one is more commonly used? Well, I’d go for the second ones as they are more commonly used in everyday English:

Who did she send an email to?
Who did she receive a reply from?
Who is she travelling to London with?
Who is she going to stay in Brighton with?

And this ends our mini lesson. Go, practice and subscribe. See you soon.
