Afford: amit megengedhetsz magadnak

What if you wanted to buy a luxury car but you didn’t have the necessary amount of money? Well, then you can’t afford that car. So, if you don’t have enough money to buy something, then you can’t afford it.

Check out these examples:

As for now, I can’t afford a new mini-bus for the family. I don’t have the money for it, so I can’t afford it.

Most university students can’t afford the rent, so they try to get into the university hostel. They don’t have enough money to rent a place, so they can’t afford it.

Last year, my friend wanted to travel around Europe, but he couldn’t afford it. However, this year he’s got some extra income, so now he can afford to travel. He’s got the money, so he can afford to travel.

As you can see, “can afford” means you’ve got the money to do something whereas “can’t afford” means you don’t have the money to do something. However, “can/can’t afford” is not exclusively about money. You can (or can’t) afford the time to do something.

Here are some examples:

I can’t afford more than 2 weeks away from business. I don’t have more than 2 weeks (I can’t afford more than 2 weeks), or my business will suffer.

Students can’t afford years of learning to get an English exam paper. They simply don’t have that much time. They can’t afford such a long time.

Lisa felt she couldn’t afford any more time off work. Lisa felt she didn’t have any more time away from work, and she had to get back to work.

My cousin can afford 4 weeks to learn how to drive. He’s got 4 weeks without any problems to learn how to drive. 4 weeks is okay with him.

“Can’t afford” can be used not only in connection with time and money, but also in connection with anything else. If you say that you can’t afford to do something, you mean that you should not do it because it will cause problems for you if you do.

I can’t afford speeding. I shouldn’t and I won’t drive over the speed limit as it costs me money unnecessarily.

Business people can’t afford to ignore analytical data. To ignore: to not think or care about. So, they should or they have to care about analytical data. If they don’t, they lose a lot.

Last week, my parents wanted to go to the theatre, but they ran into a lot of unexpected situations. In the end, they couldn’t afford any more delay (any more waiting time) so they called a taxi.

As a business owner, I can’t afford any lazy partners. Lazy partners aren’t much of a help, so I shouldn’t have any of them.

Great. I guess you get it. Now go and practise. See you next time.
