Both of, Either of, Neither of

Hiya. Look at these pizzas. One of them is a Chicken Pizza and the other one is a Hawaiian BBQ pizza. Which one would you like to eat? Would you like the Chicken Pizza or the Hawaiian BBQ Pizza?

If you’re very hungry, you may want to eat the 2 pizzas. You know, the Chicken Pizza and the Hawaiian BBQ Pizza. So, you say, “I want both of them.”

‘Both’ means the two of them. The two pizzas. I want both of the pizzas.

If you want one pizza, but it doesn’t matter which one because you like the Chicken Pizza just as much as the Hawaiian BBQ pizza, you will say, “I want either of them” or “Either of them will do.”

“Either” means this or that. It doesn’t matter: the Chicken Pizza is just as good as the Hawaiian BBQ Pizza.

But, what if you don’t want pizza at all. You may be full or you simply hate pizzas. Of course, in that case you don’t want the Chicken Pizza or the Hawaiian BBQ Pizza, right?

So, which of the two do you want? ‘I want neither or them.’

“Neither” means not this and not that.

Good. Let’s sum it up.

If you talk about two things or people, you can use ‘both’, ‘either’ or ‘neither’.

Does he play tennis or football?
He plays both of them. Meaning: he plays tennis and football.
He plays either of them. Meaning: he plays tennis or football. I can’t remember.
He plays neither of them. Meaning: He doesn’t play tennis or football.
