Angol nyelvtan 09: Some any and no exercises

Some any and no exercises: E-book, e-mail, e-learning. Minden az elektronikus irányába tart. Hamarosan nem lesznek könyvtárak, mert egyetlen tablet-en elfér több százezer vagy éppen millió kötet. Könyvtárak zárnak be világszerte, mert a könyvből olvasás már nem kapós.

Üres a könyvtár. Nincsenek emberek az épületben. Nincsenek könyvek a polcokon. Mind tagadó mondat és az angolban többféleképpen is ki tudjuk fejezni az ilyen típusú tagadást.

Van azonban egy trükkös része az ‘any’ és a ‘no’ használatának, amelyet ebben a videóban megismerhetsz.

Íme a videó: some any and no exercises

 Grammar

Any and no to form a negative idea

Hiya! In this video, we’re going to look at how to form negative statements using ‘any’ and ‘no’. Let’s start with a couple of examples, shall we?

Look at this street here. It’s totally empty, right? What about cars and people?

There aren’t any cars in the street.
There aren’t any people there either.

Now check out this library here. It feels quite weird, huh? Where are the books and magazines? And where are the people?

Well, I can’t see any books or magazines there.
I can’t see any people either.

Great. Here is what you have to know about ‘any’: in a negative sentence use the plural form after it, like: any books, any people, any cars, any bottles etc. Of course, some words have no plural forms: beer and wine, for example.

I don’t keep any beer in the house.
Also, there isn’t any wine.

Wine and beer are uncountable: we simply don’t say ‘wines’ or ‘beers’.

Back to the empty library now! Are there any books there? No, there aren’t.

There are no books in that library.

Are there any people in it? No, there aren’t.

There are no people there.

And, in the street? Any cars or people?

I can see no people there.
There are no cars either.

No cars, no people, no books, no magazines etc. After the word ‘no’, use the plural form as shown above. Also note that the word ‘no’ creates the negative idea, so you don’t need the word ‘not’, as well.

Here are some paired examples:

There aren’t any students in the school building today.
There are no students in the school building today.

I didn’t see any films at the weekend.
I saw no films at the weekend.

This chump hasn’t bought any presents for his kids.
This chump has bought no presents for his kids.

I can’t see anybody.
I can see nobody.

Great. And with that, we end our mini-lesson there. Now go, practise. See you soon!
