Trükkös szópárok 03: skin – leather

Bőr. Kígyóbőr, disznóbőr, marhabőr, bőrdzseki, bőrcipő.

Ha minőségi cipőt, táskát, dzsekit akarsz venni, ami sokáig tart, akkor bőr holmit vásárolsz. Ha motorozol és védőruhát akarsz magadnak, bőr felszerelést vásárolsz. Az alapszó mindegyik esetben ugyanaz a magyarban.

Aztán ott van a gyümölcsök héja is: banánhéj, narancshéj, almahéj. Az is olyan, mint az emberi vagy állati bőr: külső takaró. Sőt, a felforralt és lehűlt tejen képződő hártya szintén “bőr”.

Az angol nyelvben 2 szót használunk a fentiek kifejezésére: skin és leather. Melyiket kell használnod az adott helyzetben? Hogy megértsd jobban az ‘skin’ és a ‘leather’ szavak használatát, nézd meg az alábbi videót!

Hiya. In this video, we’re going to examine two words: skin and leather

Skin is basically the outer cover of the body.

The snake sheds its skin time and again.
She’s burnt her skin.
I sometimes apply sun lotion to my skin in hot weather.

Also, when we talk about the outer layer of a fruit, we call it a skin too, like banana skin, the skin of a tomato etc.

And look at this picture of milk here. Can you see the skin on the surface? Yep, we call it skin too.

Now, leather is not skin. It is made from skin. If you check out this jacket, you can see no hair on it. And, it’s prepared in a special way. It’s no longer skin — it is leather, as in leather shoes, a leather jacket, a leather bag etc.
