Trükkös szópárok 07: glance – glimpse

Nézni. Bámulni. Megpillantani. A látással kapcsolatban sok szavunk van… ahogy az angoloknak is. Természetesen a magyar szavak nem párosíthatók össze az angol szavakkal. Két mondat a magyar nyelvből:

Bert türelmetlenül rápillantott órájára.

A távolban megpillantottuk a szorost.

Mindkét mondatban a “megpillantani” szó szerepel ugyan, de tudjuk, hogy a két szituációban két különböző cselekvésről van szó. Nem akarom a poént lelőni, talán nem gondolkodtál el még eddig ezen – a videóban választ találsz.

A lényeg, hogy az angol 2 szót használ a fenti 2 szituációra: “glance” és “glimpse”. Ez a példa jól illusztrálja: a mondat értelmét nem a szavak jelentésének összessége adja meg. Épp ellenkezőleg: egy szó jelentését a mondat (és kontextus) határozza meg.

Ezért nem működik a fordítás, mint nyelvtanulási módszer.

Hi there. Today’s confusing words are: glance and glimpse. Let’s get started, shall we?

A glance is a quick look at something. If you need to check the time, you just have a glance at your watch or at the clock on your computer or smartphone. Just one glance and you know what time it is.

Or, you take a glance at the headlines in your paper to see the leading news, right? After that, you can pick the most interesting stories and begin to read.

Whereas, ‘glimpse’ is a bit different. A ‘glimpse’ is a short look, but you can’t really, or can’t clearly see that person or thing.

For example, we had our first glimpse of the mountains in the distance. We saw it but couldn’t see it clearly. Or, coming out of the shop, the boy had a glimpse of the most beautiful girl. But then she disappeared. Did the boy see the girl clearly? Too bad, he didn’t.

How can you use these words? Glance: you can have/take or even steal a glance at somebody or something. Please note the preposition here: a glance AT somebody or something.

Glimpse: You can have/take/get or catch a glimpse of somebody or something. Also note the preposition: a glimpse OF somebody or something.
