Trükkös szópárok 09: job and work

Word Pairs: Job and work

Hi there. Confusing words. In this video we’re going to learn about ‘job’ and ‘work’. Let’s get started, shall we?

Look at this bloke. What’s his job? Obviously, he’s a dustman or a binman. And, what’s her job? She must be a police officer, right? Your job is what you do to earn money. I am a teacher, for example. That is my job.

A job can also be a task. As a teacher I’ve got a lot of jobs. I’ve got 5 to 10 jobs a day: I have to print out worksheets, correct tests, talk to students if they get stuck, shoot videos for you, write newsletters, and a whole load of other things. These are my jobs or my tasks.

My wife has a lot of jobs to do every day too. She has to cook and clean and help the kids in their learning etc. So, a job is a task, and we can count them: 3 jobs, 5 jobs etc.

But, what is work? Well, work is what you do to earn money but it is not specific. We say: I go to work (which is the place where you work), or I finish work at 5, or my work is terrible, or I love my work.

You can also say: I’ve got a lot of work to do. Here, you talk about all your tasks. It is important that you cannot count work. It is not 3 or 5 – just simply ‘work’.

Now, if you want tell me you’re too busy, you can say: “I’m far too busy today. I’m overwhelmed with all the work I’ve got. I’ve got like, 25 different jobs to do.”

You see? I’ve got a lot of work i.e. all my jobs and tasks altogether; or I’ve got a lot of jobs to do.

Hope, you get it. Now go practise. See you soon.
