Angol nyelvtan 11: Whose or who’s? Jones’… vagy Jones’s?

Whose or who’s?

Whose?

Hiya. Check out this toy here. It is my daughter’s rattle. Okay. Now here’s a question:

Whose rattle is it? It’s my daughter’s. It belongs to Helsa, my daughter.

Check out this smartphone. Whose smartphone is it? It is the manager’s. It belongs to the manager.

Now look at this pneumatic drill. Whose drill is it? It’s the workman’s. It belongs to the workman.

Now check out these tools. Whose tools are they? They’re my Grandad’s. They belong to my Grandad.

Good. So, when you talk about people and their possessions, you just add an apostrophe and an ‘s’. E.g. my Dad’s car, the teacher’s hair, the kid’s books.

But what if you talk about people and not just one person? Check out these kids here. And they’ve got books, right? Whose books are they? They’re the kids’. They belong to the kids.

As you can see, we don’t put another ‘s’ at the end of the word – only an apostrophe. E.g. the students’ school bus, the teachers’ room, the doctors’ union etc.

But, what if a name ends with an ‘s’, like James, Jones, Thomas, Jesus etc. How would you name their possessions?

Well, you’ve got two options. Listen and check out the writing on the left of the screen: James’ and James’s; Jones’ and Jones’s; Thomas’ and Thomas’s; Jesus’ and Jesus’s. So, you can write these phrases in two ways.

Let’s see a couple of examples: James’ car; Thomas’s kids; Jesus’ life etc.

Ok, our mini-lesson ends there. Now go practise. See you soon.
