Trükkös szópárok 01: wonder – wander

Az angol nyelv tele van olyan szavakkal, amelyek vagy nagyon hasonlóak jelentésükben, vagy hasonlóak hangzásukban, de jelentésük teljesen eltérő. Utóbbi esetben az angol nyelvet tanuló könnyen zavarba jöhet.

Ebben a videóban 2, könnyen összetéveszthető szót tisztázunk: a ‘wonder’ és a ‘wander’ szavakat. A példákon keresztül mindkét szó könnyen érthető és tanulható.

Word Pairs: Wander and wonder

Hiya. In this video, we’re checking the meaning of the following words: wonder and wander. Okay, let’s get started with ‘wonder’.

Look at this kid. What’s he doing? He’s thinking, right? He’s wondering. What’s he wondering about? He’s wondering whether he will ever get a cool bicycle.

Now check out this man here. He’s thinking too. He doesn’t look satisfied. He’s wondering why he’s been fired from his job.

Okay. What does ‘wonder’ exactly mean?

We already know it means ‘to think’. However, by definition it means to think about something and try to decide what is true, what will happen, what you should do etc.

In other words, when you have a dilemma or a problem, you may wonder.

Notice how we pronounce the word: wonder, wonder.

Cool. Let’s move on to ‘wander’ now.

Here, this child is wandering in the streets. And this woman is wandering in the city.

‘Wander’ means to walk slowly around or to a place, and it feels like you don’t really know where you’re going or where you want to go.

Look at this child here. He’s not going anywhere, right? No, he isn’t, but his thoughts and mind are. He’s not listening, and he’s outside of the classroom. His mind is wandering. His thoughts are wandering.

Note how we pronounce this word: wander, wander.
