Tudósok korábban azt gondolták, hogy az emberi agyban kb. 100 milliárd neuron van, az utóbbi kutatások azonban arra engednek következtetni, hogy 85 milliárd neuron van az emberi agyban. Persze, gondolhatjuk, 15 milliárd neuron ide vagy oda, talán nem is számít. A kérdés inkább az, meg lehet-e számolni a neuronokat az agyban? Természetesen nem. Megszámlálni nem, legfeljebb megbecsülni tudjuk. Számolás és becslés – a mindennapok része.

Think about the human brain. The human brain is made of a network of neurons, right? But, how many neurons are there in the human brain? Of course, we cannot tell for sure. However, we can estimate the number. We can give a rough number, but we can’t give an exact number.

So, how many neurons are there in the human brain?
Scientists estimate that a human brain contains around 85bn nerons. Can they tell the exact number? No, they can’t. They can only estimate it.

We often make estimates in our everyday lives. When you hold a party, you try estimate how much drink you’ll need. When you drive, you try to estimate how much fuel you’ll use and so on.

This guy here has underestimated the amount of fuel he needed and got broken down. And this woman has overestimated the amount of food she needed for the party. Unlucky.

Calculating is different.
When you calculate, you use mathematical figures and numbers to find out the exact number or amount of something. You can calculate how much you have to pay when shopping on the Internet. The system automatically adds up the amounts and you can see how much you have to pay.

However, when collecting the goods in the supermarket, you can only estimate how much you have to pay, and the shop assistant will calculate the exact amount at the cash desk.
