Angol intonáció 08: Question tags – Ugye angolul

Ugye angolul: Nem voltál ma iskolában, ugye? A magyarban ezt a kérdést kétféleképpen is fel tudjuk tenni:

  • Úgy, hogy az valódi kérdés legyen,
  • és úgy, hogy azt kommunikáljuk, tudjuk az igazságot.

Az angol intonáció sorozat 8. részében a question tag-ek intonációját gyakorolhatod. Ebben a videóban nem megyünk bele a nyelvtani definíciókba, csak a nyelvi dallamra koncentrálunk, illetve arra, hogy mely intonációs minta mit kommunikál:

  • Kérdést teszünk fel,
  • vagy közlünk, amire reakciót várunk.

Mivel a magyar intonációs minta nagy mértékben eltér az angoltól, érdemes sorozat videóira időt fordítani: a ritmus és dallam hiánya, vagy nem angolos (nyilván magyaros) megléte megöli a közlést.

Question tags

Hiya. As this video is about the tone of question tags, it would be nice to start with an easy definition, wouldn’t it? So, what the heck is a ‘question tag’? Let’s figure it out.

Okay. A question tag is short ending that turns a statement into a question, e.g. You didn’t go to school today, did you? Note that ‘…did you?’ at the end turns the whole sentence into a question, so we’re expecting an answer there: ‘No, I didn’t.’

Now. When it comes to tones, there are two ways:

You didn’t go to school today, did you? (falling)
You didn’t go to school today, did you? (rising)

Not surprisingly, they are not the same. Let’s figure out what they really communicate, shall we?

When the tone falls, you’re not really asking; you just invite the listener to agree with you. If you say: ‘You didn’t go to school today, did you?’, you express that you know that I didn’t go to school, but you want me to respond: ‘Yeah, you’re right.’ or ‘No, I didn’t.’

Here are some more examples like that. Please repeat after me. Pause the video after each sentence:

Nice day, isn’t it?
You don’t like fish, do you?
She often comes late, doesn’t she?
He’s a bit of a loser, isn’t he?
They can’t read music, can they?
You like golf, don’t you?

Great. However, question tags can express real questions. If so, the tone rises:

You didn’t go to school today, did you?

This is a real question and I expect a yes-no answer: ‘Yes, I did.’ or ‘No, I didn’t.’ or any other similar responses.

Please repeat after me. Remember, we are asking real questions now:

You don’t fancy fish, do you?
She often comes late, doesn’t she?
They can’t read music, can they?
She wasn’t at home yesterday, was she?
You like golf, don’t you?
She might come to the party, mightn’t she?

Angol tanulás otthon – Angol Fonetika 2.

Az angol kiejtés szoros velejárója az intonáció. Míg a kiejtés – vagy fonetiks – a hangokra koncentrál, addig az intonáció a mondat dallamára.

Egy mondat dallama – azaz hanglejtése – nem rengeteg dolog képes kommunikálni. Egy nyelvtanilag kérdésként felépített mondat a hanglejtésnek köszönhetően kifejezhet döbbenetet vagy épp haragot: “Megőrültél?!”

Nos, a magyar és az angol nagyon távol egymástól, amikor a hanglejtést vizsgáljuk. A Fonetika és intonáció anyagaink ezt szakadékot hivattak áthidalni.

Természetesen a leggyorsabb módja a kiejtés és intonáció elsajátításának az, ha  sok-sok angolt hallasz. Ennél kevesebb angol egyszerűen nem elég jó.
