Trükkös szópárok 14: “take care of” or “look after”?

“Az élet veszélyes” szól a mondás. Vagy “semmi sem állandó”. Vagy “egy rendszer a rendezettből a rendezetlen felé halad”. Nos, az életben mindez igaz, ezért igyekszünk vigyázni, felügyelni dolgainkra, tulajdonunkra, embertársainkra:

  • vigyázunk a kertre,
  • rendben tartjuk a házunkat,
  • vigyázunk a gyerekekre, vagy épp valakit megkérünk, hogy vigyázzon rájuk,
  • vigyázunk a ruhánkra stb.

Van az angolban 2 kifejezés, ami gyakran fejtörést okoz: melyiket is kellene használnom? “Take care of” vagy “Look after”?

Word Pairs: “Take care of” and “Look after”

Hiya. Imagine this: you’ve got a big, beautiful garden, but you’re going on holiday for a week or two. You definitely need someone to help you. You know, with the lawn, plants and fruits. So, you need someone to take care of your garden or look after your garden.

“Take care of your garden.” and “Look after your garden.” What’s the difference?

Well, both ‘take care of’ and ‘look after’ mean the same: to treat something carefully so that it stays in good condition.

  • The nice garden has to remain nice;
  • the clean and tidy house has to remain clean and tidy;
  • the new clothes have to remain in good condition …

Here’s an example:

All the neighbours take care of their houses. So, they do everything to keep their houses in excellent condition: they clean them up every day, they renovate and paint them regularly etc.

All the neighbours take care of their houses.
Or: All the neighbours look after their houses.

Here’s another example:

Don’t worry about the garden. I’ll take care of it while you’re on holiday;
Or: Don’t worry about the garden. I’ll look after it while you’re on holiday.

So, I’ll do everything to keep it clean and nice.

You can also use ‘take care of’ and ‘look after’ when you talk about people or animals

The baby-sitter is coming to take care of the children while we’re away.
Or: The baby-sitter is coming to look after the children while we’re away. 

So, she will help the kids, give them food and drink, make them go to bed in time etc. She will take care of them, or look after them.

But still: are there any differences between ‘take care of’ and ‘look after’?

Sure, there are, when it comes to usage. Look at this example:

All the neighbours take care of their houses.

Now, you can add some words to the phrase like this:

All the neighbours take good care of their houses.
Or: They take great care of their houses etc.
Or: They take excellent care of their houses.

When it comes to ‘look after’, you can add ‘for whom’ to the phrase:

Look after the kids for me, please.
No worries, I’m going to look after the bags for you while you’re buying the tickets.
