He was just about to leave, when the security guard stopped him. Poor ned he didn’t know he’d been in surveillance ever since he entered the shop. Of course he didn’t have the cash. The owner totally lost the plot and called the coppers.
They took the ned away, the shop owner was nervous, he lit a fag and smoked it.

The ned is a troublemaker. The ned in the story, had no money. He was broke or skinned. In more colloquial english.

He decided to nick a few things from a shop. What did he want then? He wanted to steal, but he failed of course, he couldn’t show the money. The owner lost the plot, he got really angry and called the coppers. You know the policeman. Then he lit a fag, a cigarette and smoked that.
